“We’ll buy you nice clothes if you want,” I remember my father saying in earnest one afternoon in the late ’90s when it became clear I was gonna be the type of teenager / human who exclusively styled himself from thrift shops. I appreciated the sentiment, but c’mon, Dad, when’s the last time the Gap sold a t-shirt with Jake the Snake AND Papa Shango on it? That’s more valuable to me than all the ascots in the world.
